Chapter 6 of one of my favourite books, Radical Remission - Surviving cancer against all odds, talks about the role that positive emotions play in healing.
Modern medicine now knows that positive emotions, such as joy, happiness and love release a surge of healing hormones into our bloodstream. These hormones (including serotonin, relaxin, oxytocin, dopamine and endorphins) play many and varied roles such as:
infection control
helping the immune system fight cancer by increasing natural killer cell, white blood cell, and red blood cell activity
scanning for, and removing, cancer cells
improving nutrient absorption
lowering cortisol (a stress hormone which can have deleterious effects on the body, including the immune system)*
With this mind (and understanding that exercise is medicine), I have embarked on an physically ambitious project. I love a good project, especially if it involves me being in the great, natural outdoors. Taking a project from concept to completion gives me purpose. It fills me with joy and happiness to create something from nothing with the help of my loved ones. My happy hormones are flowing .... and my immune system is all the more thankful for this surge in healing hormones. In short, I'm in my happy place.
